Note: Her parents lived in Deerfield, Mass. Her father was a
Revolutionary Soldier, and served to the close of the war. It
is said that her father then sold his farm taking Continental
money in payment. The money proved worthless, which left the
gentleman penniless, affecting his health seriously. (Hurlbut

Note: He studied law under his uncle John W Hulbert, and was admitted
to the Bar in 1809. He lived a while in Pittsfield, Mass. (a
letter to Henry H Hurlbut from Henry Hubbard of Pittsfield,
said Chauncey H. was 'the readiest inditer of a special
declaration' that he ever knew, 'but was not an eloquent
advocate like his uncle.') Chauncey also lived in Elbridge, and
was probably the partner of Mr. Birdseye. He removed from
Onondaga Co., NY to north eastern Ohio (ten miles south of
Painesville), where he died. (HG)

Note: He was a lawyer having studied with his uncle John W Hurlbut,
of Pittsfield, Mass., and was admitted to practice in 1815, and
to the Supreme Court of Mass. at Lenox, in 1821. He moved to
Elbridge, NY in the winter of 1821/22, and then to Erie, Pa.,
in 1825. He was engaged in merchandise in Erie for a while, was
also Justice of the Peace, being appointed by Gov. Wolf, and
afterwards by election until his death. (HG)
