We know from Smith's Volunteer Enlistment papers that he was born in Shel don, Vermont. Shown below are a few brief facts about Sheldon Vt. Abou t Sheldon. But when we came across the LDS (AFN: P1MX-95) for Bartholome w HULBERT we saw many similarities that tied in - we HAVE NOT YET TIED AL L PARTS - but feel 'if' Alice was in fact ALSON, we may have our tie. W e will pursue this lead.

Who Served in the Civil War? Beginning in April 1861, a number of Preside ntial proclamations were issued, calling for men to serve in the Union fo rces. These proclamations were met through militia activation, voluntar y enlistments and draft. Note that those who were drafted could hire some one to substitute for them. Many units were mustered for 30-60-90 days o r 6-9-12 months. The normal term of service was 1-3 years. Most of the so ldiers served from units formed locally. Re-enlisting soldiers were not n ecessarily re-assigned to the same unit (or even to the same branch). The y even sometimes served in units from different states.

We have not known a great deal of Smith HURLBURT, we suspect his name 'Sm ith' may have been given him from his mother's maden name. He was born i n Vermont this is supported by the LDS site. We have sent for and receive d the Military Records We do know he moved a few times before 1864 when h e enlisted in the US Army as a volunteer [Souces - New York: Report o f the Adjutant General. Resident not listed, 30 yrs old. Enlisted on 1/4/ 64 at Mt. Morris, N.Y. as a Private. on 1/7/64 he mustered into 'H' Co. N .Y.24th Calvary. ( source of the following detail on the 24th NY Calvary . We kne w for quite sometime that Smith HURLBURT b. 1833 @ Sheldon, Vermont. We h ave not known a great deal of Smith HURLBURT, we suspect his name 'Smith ' may have been given him from his mother's maiden name. He was born in V ermont this is only supported by our gleaning some data from the LDS We b Site. We had originally sent for the Military Records - of his initia l enlistment. We do know he moved a few times before 1864 when he enliste d in the US Army as a volunteer [Sauces - New York: Report of the Adjut ant General. Resident not listed, 30 yrs old. Enlisted on 1/4/64 at Mt. M orris, N.Y. as a Private. on 1/7/64 he mustered into 'H' Co. N.Y.24th Cal vary. ( source of the following detail on the 24th NY Calvary. [http://ww w.morrisville.edu/library/local_history/sites/unitinf o/24cav.htm l] by S ue Greenhagen 24th NY Calvary [ nicknamed German 1st Calvary (or Cavalry )]
Up until now the only this we knew was he was transferred out on 4/28/6 4 (Transferred to Navy). I sent off for US Navy records in an attempt t o learn more about his live and death and hopefully learn a little more a bout his parents etc.
Like any enthusiastic genealogist I was most anxious to receive and revie w the files from the National Archives. Today my thin envelope arrive d - (not a good sign - thin envelopes are generally a sign of 'nothing fo und.')
The person who handled my request sent and included the following note: ' We searched Civil War Navy records for Smith HURLBURT and other derivativ es there of. We cannot find any record of enlistment. We presume you alre ady have his compiled military service record for his service in the 24t h N.Y. Cav., as this record was accessed last year. That record shows h e was on a list of DESERTERS/dated Sept 10, 1864. We presume he was relea sed from the Army on condition he transfer to the Navy, but he NEVER ENLI STED in the US Navy.
Conclusion: Smith HURLBURT was a deserter

We know from various census index (s) that he lived in Mt. Morris; Cortla nd @ 1830; Monroe County @ 1850.
Apparently his spouse lived with Alson HURLBURT after Smith enlisted or v olunteered.
Shown below are the dataI have extracted: 1) HURLBURT, Smith 1830 New Yo rk Census Index he was listed on page # 126 and residing at Cortland Coun ty in the town of Homer. there was one other Hurlburt shown in the same c ounty but HUTLBURT, Timothy resided in Truxton he is referenced on pag e # 042.
2) HURLBURT, Smith @ 1850 New York Census Index he had moved to Monroe Co unty @ Rochester N.Y. and resided in WARD # 1 as referenced on page 10. T he index references other HURLBURTS as well but only one other in the sam e WARD. That is J. M. HURLBURT; those also residing in Rochester were Bar tholomew @ WARD # 8 page 387; Hosmer @ WARD 3 page 115. The index refere s to a Sarah HURLBURT @ WHEATLAND - same county of Monroe as seen on pag e 248.
Souces - New York: Report of the Adjutant General. Resident not listed , 30 yrs old. Enlisted on 1/4/64 at Mt. Morris, N.Y. as a Private. on 1/7 /64 he mustered into 'H' Co. N.Y.24th Calvary. He was transferred out o n 4/28/64 (Transferred to Navy)
We have also obtained from the National Archives copies of Veterans Recor ds - including his enlistment or 'Volunteer' papers, and it appears he us ed the spelling HURLBERT ??? Also he enlisted at age 30 Jan 4, 1864. He i s described as being 'dark' complexion, black hair and black eyes. He wa s noted as being 5'10 1/4 tall. This is attested to by G.Briggs MD Examin ing Surgeon. The pension records were also obtained.
Per Emial with Olive Mae Lindell dated Aug 1999: Tom, from the above sinc e was 30 then he must have been born 1834 birthday must have been after t he census that we determined as being born in 1833. Another comment: Sinc e Mary Beth Bimber said there were two files for Smith Hurlburt. Probabl y one has his service for the Navy.
Per Email with Olive Mae Lindell dated Dec. 17, 1999 We now know he spell ed his name Hulbert instead of Hurlburt, was born in Sheldon , Vermont a bt. 1834(Since he enlisted Jan. 4, 1864 at 30 yrs of age.at Mt, Morris, N ew York). He was 5 feet 10 1/4 inches tall. Had Black eyes (Where do bla ck eyes come from? Are they calling brown eyes black?) had Black hair (M y uncle David had Black curly Hair, and my Aunt Ella had black hair, my M other's hair was blonde when little then brown like mine was, then gray. ) Dark complexion Smith was transferred to the Navy April 29, 1864
Source: The Ontario County (NY) Records and Archives Center @ http://raim s.com/home.html date October 31, 1999, 2 HURLBURTs are listed as servin g in the Civil War and from Ontario County: HURLBURT MARCUS C . VICTOR ; and HURLBURT SMITH M T. MORRIS
