He was a wheelwright, and first settled in Portland Society, Chatham, Ct . His father deeded him, 1743, one third of his Long Lots, also in 1745 , 1746, and 1759, other grants in the Society of Middle Haddam, and the t own, in 1749, agve him 3/4 of an acre in the same Society. In 1740 or 41 , he bought a place about 2 miles below Middle Haddam, at which he manufa ctured spinning wheels for both flax and wool. Willaim and his wife wer e admitted to membership in the 1st Church of Middle Haddam Soc. May 10 , 1741, and were afterwards members of the Episcople Church oof Middle Ha ddam, he being one of the founders. it has been reported that William rem oved to Ashfield, Mass., and lived with his son Reuben, which is quite pr obable, as Reuben did live in Ashfield a short time. Yet William was a ve ry oold man if he removed to Ashfield at the time his son did, which wa s but a little before the War of 1812. Yet the father may have gone ther e some years before. (HG)
