Notes

He was a missionary in Kijabi (via Mombassa); British East Africa; direct or of African Inland Missions. He was secretary of the Young Men's Chris tian Association for many years and for the last eleven years superintend ent of the African Inland Mission, British East Africa, and has had grea t success in that work, planting many missionary stations. His family wen t with him when he went out last in 1901. The wife and daughter, Alta Bet h, are efficient assistants. He had reduced the native language of tha t section to writing and print and translated hymns and many parts of th e Bible and other books and organized schools with competent teachers. H e has special gifts or talent for this kind of work, having a pleasing pe rsonality, and masterful spirit that makes it possible to guide and contr ol as a wise parent or teacher would a child or student or as a general m ight lead an army. He has had gratifying success and at the writing (191 1) is at home for the recuperation of health and to furnish opportunity f or the education of his children. The five children were in Africa nine y ears. Reached home on furlough July, 1910, and studying in Oberlin, Ohio.
