Captain Hurlbut built and occupied the house later owned by Levi Goodwin . A newspaper article by Hon. S. W. Adams, of Hartford, Ct: 'Capt. Hurlbu t was a scientific navigator, if one may judge from a series of nautica l problems entered by him in a blank book which he bought in London in th e year 1800, and now lying before me. In November 1796, he started, appar ently as a first mate of the ship Neptune, Daniel Green master from New Y ork, on a voyage around the globe. This cruise is said to have been the f irst in which the globe was circumnavigated by an American vessel. The Ne ptune went first to the Falkland Islands, for seal skins, touching at man y islands of the south Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, including the Sandwit ch then inhabited by barbarians. The logbooks kept by Capt. Hurlbut and e nding with the stay of the ship at Whampoa, China, in December 1798, ar e now before me, and they contain much curious and interesting reading. * *** It must have been more than three years to complete the cruise. A mem orandum shows that in 1803, Capt. Hurlbut was master of the schooner Weas el, plying between New York and the West Indies.' He died in New York o f small-pox. (Hurlbut Gen)

Notes

Tom was the youngest of the family and according to family members was sp oiled. According to Betty Wattam, Tom was a very unhappy man. This was p robably due in part to the fact that Tom was 'homosexual' or 'Gay' as w e would say today. In the late 1800's - early 1900's being a homosexua l was not acceptable in families or in the community. Whether this led t o his abuse of alcohol is unknown but certainly it would have at least ha d some affect. Tom also was not interested in carrying on the family far ming tradition. He remained on the family farm and upon the death of hi s parents he inherited their farm at Lots 28, 29, and 30 N. Marysburgh o n the Bay side. Tom, according to Mr. Leavitt a co-worker at Mc Farl and Constuction in the early 1950's, admitted that he lost the family far m due to alcohol abuse and his ability to make bad financial decisions . Leavitt said that Tom was critical of himself for his failures in life . The farm at lots 28, 29 and 30 North Marysburgh stayed in the Hurl but name until the 26th of July 1955 when it was lost to the Treasurer o f Ontario.
