Notes

Reverend James Owen as a boy was not interested in school, but later he w anted an education. Trying to make up for lost time, he attended terms a t Wesylan University and taught school. Once he was going to school in De laware, the mud was so deep caused him to miss the train, he waled a dist ance of about 20 miles and as to attend classes the next day. He moved t o Illinois in 1862, farmed in the summer, taught school in the winter. H e was a local preacher and was often called in to fill the pulpit as a su pply preacher. He stayed in Illinois until his father's death, then he mo ved back to Ohio to take charge of his mother's farm. [S92]
