Notes

He was a seaman and in 1807, was part owner, with Bazaleel Latimer, of th e sloop 'Mary', built by Samuel Dimock, but possibly Samuel Buck was mast er. He occupied the old dwell of his father and grand father in Wethersfi eld. He may have been the 'J. Hurlburt' of the 'Schooner Seaflower', arri ved, 16 day, frm. Point Petre, Guadalupe.'-Aug. 6, 1793.-(Courant). In 18 13, he was captured by the British, and paroled for an exchange; and wa s given this Certificate of Parole; ' Parole By Authority of th e Commissioner | for conducting His Majesty's | Transport Servic e, for taking | leave of Sick and Wounded Sea | men, and for th e leave and Cust|ody of Prisoners of War.

These are to certify, That James Hurlburt as described on the back hereo f, late 'Seaman of an American Brig' has been released from Custody and p ermitted to return to 'New York' for the purpose of effecting his Exchang e, by procuring the release of a British Prisoner of War, of Equal Rank , upon his having engaged that he will surrender himself at such Place, a nd at such Time, as the said Commissioners or their Agents for the time b eing may require; and that he will not serve against the United Kingdom o f Great Britain and Ireland, or any of the Dominions thereunto belonging , or against any Powers in Alliance with Great Britain, until he shall ha ve been regularly exchanged.

An Whereas the said 'James Hurlburt' is permitted to proceed direct, an d without Delay from 'Barbadoes to New York, calling on St. Vincent', al l and singular His Majesty's Officers, Civil and Military, are hereby des ired and required to suffer him to pass accordingly, without any Hinderan ce or Molestation whatever, provided he leave this Colony within 'Six' da ys from the Date hereof; but if he should deviate from the Route hereby p ointed out, or be found in this Colony after the time allowed to him, h e will be liable to immediate Apprehention and Imprisonment.

Given under my Hand and Seal, at 'Barbadoes' this 'twenty-seventh' Day o f 'May', 1813. John Barker Lt. Col. & Agent fo r Prisoners of War (Seal) Gratis

On the back of this Parole is the following description of James Hurlbur t
'Name, James Hurbet; Rank, Seaman; Age, 20 years; Stature 5 feet 5 inche s; Person, Thin; Visage, Long; Complextion, Fair; Hair, Brown; Eyes, Blue ; Marks or Wounds, &c. ------.'

This description, curiously enough, does not seem to tally exactly wit h that contained in the 'Protection Papers' issued to him in Apl. 1796, u nder the signature of Thos. Seymour, Mayor of the City of Hartford, Conn. , and the seal of the State of Conn., April 21, 1796, which describes hi s as 'five feet, two and 1/8 inches in stature; black hair, dark brown ey es, darkish complexion & that he is & ever has been a citizen of Wethersf ield and of the U.S.'

He was, in 1827, a member of the 3rd Co., 2nd Reg., Light Artillery of C t., orrin Webster, Capt. (all the above taken from The History of Ancien t Wethersfield by Stiles)

Notes

William Bain Hurlbut was a reluctant farmer who, along with his brother T om worked the Hurlbut homestead at L 28,29&30 Marysburg Twp. on the 'Bay ' side. This home lies on 'Prinyers Cove'. It is a brick two story hom e which lies on the north side of the road with a drive shed across the r oad on th south side. A large barn once stood to the east of the house b ut it had long since been torn down in 1998 when I visited there to tak e pictures. William Bain or 'Bain' as he was commonly known is docum ented in the local book 'Booze, Boats and Billions' as being a participan t in an illegal liquor smuggling operation. Apparently Bain was contract ed to transport a load of contraband liquor from the shores of Prinyers C ove to the Township road where it was loaded into waiting motor vehicles . This particular operation went amiss and along with others he was caug ht by the local Ontario Police Constabulary, and fined $200.00 for his pa rt in the fiasco. According to 'legend', when Bain appeared in court th e Magistrate told him that he was 'surprised to see a son of Danforth Hur lbut in his court' to which Bain replied 'well your honour it was you wh o sent me the invitation'. Bains son, Carl Hurlbut, told me that this i ncident was of particular embarrassment to the Hurlbut family and to hi s mother. According to Betty Wattam, Bain was only one of many who , during the Depression era, participated in the illegal trade of alcoho l in the County in order to try to make ends meet. Bain, who was one o f the unlucky few caught in the act could always laugh about it afterword s. Ruth Hurlbut, wife of Danforth the 2nd, remembers Bain as having an ex ceptional sense of humour. He was well respected in the community and wa s a member of the United Church and the Elks Lodge. Pallbearers at Bain s funeral were Raymond Ostrander, George Rose, Robert Miller, Donald Powe rs, Arthur Frizzell and Ross VanVlack
