LEW HURLBUTT DIES IN NORTH

WELL KNOWN PIONEER RESIDENT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY DIES IN OREGON

Lewis S. Hurlbutt has passed over. These sad words came yesterday fro m the home of his son, Frank at Warrington, Oregon, where the old pionee r met the grim reaper after a stroke of apoplexy. Only a few weeks ago , Hurlbutt was shaking hands with old friends in this city. He was going , he said then, to visit his son, Frank, and then surprise his other son , Ed, who is in Alaska. Fate, however, had decreed otherwise, and at War rington, he found the end of the long trail.

Lew Hurlbutt was one of the few outstanding characters in this county' s early days-those now storied days when a six horse span pulled the lumb ering stage over hair-raising mountain roads from San Francisco over th e corduroy roads which cut the dense redwoods surrounding Humboldt Bay . Among the most likeable of all the rough and hardy stage drivers was L ew Hurlbutt. A tall, straight, well-built man, he was in those days wit h a hearty laugh and a merry twinkling eye that even age could not dull . After many years behind his team of six, Lew reluctantly abandoned th e road and engaged in stock raising on his well-known Iaqua ranch. He wo rked hard on his range and, as a result, was able a few years ago to reti re to his comfortable home at San Leandro.

Lewis Samuel Hurlbutt was 70 years old, and came to Humboldt from his na tive state, New Hampshire, when but little more than a boy. He is surviv ed by his wife, now at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Timothy Mullen of K neeland Prairie, also by the two sons and the daughter mentioned. The bo dy will be cremated in Oregon. [S1022]
