Notes
Harold was raised on Circle Dr.in Cedar Rapids, IA. His father built a n
ew house on several acres extending to Center Point Rd. The children walk
ed to Cold Springs school (about where the Spring House is located) Durin
g the depression the family lost the house and acreage on Circle Dr and r
eturned to Springville. Harold walked the family cow the 15 miles or so f
rom Circle Dr. to the house in Springville. At the age of 19 he owned 1s
t Street Flour and Feed at the corner of 1st Ave and 1st St. in Cedar Rap
ids. (This store prior to Harold's feed store was known as Horacks Saloo
n holding 5 bunk houses in the front and a barn and stable in the back. T
he Budwieser horses were boarded there.) After discharged from the Army a
nd returning to Springville he purchased the tavern were business was a b
ooming affair. After marrying, they then purchased the grocery store; Ba
tchelder's Grocery and the Springville Cafe. Later on he and Bonnie owne
d the Glass Tap Tavern in Monticello, IA, being the first tavern there t
o offer liquor by the drink. Harold was the 2nd boy (out of 5) Howard be
ing 1st.- where it's been said that his mother upon the birth of Harold t
hought she might switch the two boys names'. Harry (Pat) Batchelder, Haro
ld's father; was quite worried about all the boys going off to the war-an
d sure enough, all 5 were in the Army, Air Force, or Merchant Marines al
l at the same time. Harold was injured (his leg) during WW II and spent o
ver a year in O' Rielly General Hospital in Springfield, MO as they trie
d to save his leg. Although it never completely healed correctly, it di
d mend and he eventually went home. As a young man he would do farm wor
k for the Gardemanns on their farm. When he was 18-Bonnie Gardemann - wh
o would later be his wife-was 8. Many years later they married. Harold an
d Bonnie lived the majority of their married life on their acerage in Par
atla (on the blacktop between Springville and Mt. Vernon) At one time-pri
or to the Batchelder family- Paralta was quite a railroad town boasting s
tockyards, turnarounds between Chicago and Cedar Rapids- and it's been sa
id - once upon a time-a hiding place for bootleg moonshine. The home pla
ce of Harold and Bonnie could be classified as Ol' McDonald's Farm. The
y had a little of every type of animal with almost all the neices and nep
hews enjoying the horses, dogs etc and always the creek that ran by. A
t the age of 80 Harold continues to live there-farming a small patch of s
oybeans
