Notes

From the 'Henry County History' comes; 'Henry County has many prosperou s and successful farmers who are the architects of there own fortunes, ha ving through their own unaided efforts gained a handsome competence. Amon g these is the subject of this personal history, who has been identifie d with the development and upbuilding of the county since 1858, while hi s name is inseparably connected with its agricultural and financial inter ests. He makes his home on section 6, Galva township, where he owns a fin e farm.

'On coming west in 1840 he located south of Victoria in Knox County, an d while engaged in the practice of his profession (he was a physician an d a graduate of one of the eastern schools), his sons operated and improv ed the farm. 'During his boyhood Frederick pursued his studies in a primi tive log schoolhouse with its slab benches and other crude furniture. H e remained at home assisting in the labors of the farm until the death o f his father in 1858 when he came to Henry County and purchased eight acr es of unimproved land in Burns township, which he at once began to brea k and cultivate...As his financial resources increased he added to his la nd possessions from time to time until now he owns one thousand acres o f valuable land in this county divided into five farms which are locate d in Weller, Galva, and Burns townships. He is one of the largest land ow ners in the southern part of the county...He has not confined his attenti on wholly to agricultural pursuits, but was one of the promoters and a la rge stockholder of the Farmers Elevator of Galva, also a director and vic e-president of the stock company of the same; a stockholder of the Firs t National bank of that place...

'As a Republican, Mr Hurlbutt took an active interest in public affair s and has held several miner township offices serving as school directo r many years also as trustee. He gave to the support of church work altho ugh not a member of any religious denomination and never withheld his ai d from any enterprise which he believed calculated to advance the moral e ducation or material welfare of his community.....'
