Eagum (Aegum), Friesland, Netherlands; res. farmstead "Hornema" at Aeg um; The Rensselaer-Bowier papers, documents written in the 1630's by Dutc h early settlers, state that Douwe Evertse Fonda (1580-1653) was a Frisia n (West Germanic); Tacitus, the Roman historian, stated that the Frisian s dwelt along the coast of the North Sea. They were converted to Christia nity before AD 800. The family of Fonda was originally from the Republi c of Genoa, Italy.

Notes

Harry was the one Gardemann boy who did not become a farmer. Instead, h e went into the service going against his fathers wishes. When he got o ut of the service he was a road maintanace worker for several years the n an engineer on the railroad that went through Atkins. He followed Laur a to St. Louis asking her to come back to Iowa and get married. She di d and they did, living in Atkins, IA. Harry went to Iowa City hospitals c omplaining of chest pains-before the cause was, he died. This was the da y before his wife's birthday. [S127]

Notes

As early as 1734, his father deeds him a piece of pasture land ' for hi s attention and great care of him in his advanced age'. Subsequently he g ave him 20 acres in 'Long Hill' and 20 acres in Straddle Hill, and in 174 3 a building lot adjoining his fathers homestead. In 1754 Nathaniel sol d 3 acres west side of town plat for L234. He is understood to have remov ed to Sharon, and as late as 1781, then of Sharon, he deeded land to Thom as Hurlbut of Middletown, though this may have been a son. (HG)
