Notes

In 1863, he lived in Hartsgrove, Ohio. (HG) He was at the age of 18 year s when his father moved the family to Hartsgrove, Ohio from Winchester, C t., arriving there on May 13, 1842. Primarily a farmer, he raised cattl e and hogs and also operated a cheese factory on his farm. he was in th e mercantile business in Hartsgrove with H.H.Grover from1867 to 1869. h e was said to have been worth over $100,000 at one time, but lost most o f his property in the depression of the 1890's. When he died in 1897, h e had an estate of only a few thousand dollars. At the height of his succ ess, he owned 1500 acres of land south and east of Hartsgrove. he held ne arly all the township offices at one time or another, except that of cler k. In 1871, he was elected a county commissioner, an office he held for 1 2 years. (Mike Lampson) [S834]
