He was the twin of his sister Bethia, who died at age about two months. H e removed with his parents to Vermont, when in his 9th year. In his yout h he worked on the farm, and also learned of his father the trade of carp enter and joiner. In the falls of 1802, he accompaned his Jesse to wester n New York, where he bought 40 acres in Batavia village and worked with h is brother on the old Court House, Jail, etc, in the new village and in t he fall of the succeeding year sold his lot and returned to Vermont. Afte r his marriage he lived in Benson, Vt, and Champlain, NY, but in 1813, h e spent a brief period in the town of his nativity (Westhampton, Mass) bu t soon removed to Cambridge, NY, and in the spring of 1814 became a resid ent of the village of Hoosick Falls, where he continued to live some 23 y ears. From Hoosick Falls he removed to Oswego, NY and in 1845, to Racine , Wis. Jonathan was for a short time a soldier in the was of 1812. He wa s a skillful mechanic, and a good farmer, and worthy citizen. The days o f his strength were those of unceasing industry and hard work. In his early years he worked on his fathers farm, and in April 1843 accom panied his father's family to Ohio, where they settled at Hartsgrove, Ash tabula County. He was awhile a teacher in the public schools. Becoming in terested in the subject of religion, he was after his conversion impresse d with the idea that his duty was to become a minister of the Gospel. I n March 1849, he was licensed as an exhorter; and in that year he went t o the Chagrin Falls circuit as a supply, where a vacancy had occurred. H e joined the Erie Conference at Painesville, Ohio, in 1850; was ordaine d deacon at Jamestown, NY., in 1852, and elder at Cleveland, Ohio, in 185 4. For 25 years he was engaged in the active work, holding many of the hi gh places of trust in the conference, serving repeatedly as presiding eld er and delegate to the General Conference, etc. In 1869 he received fro m Willoughby College the honor of M.A., and in 1871, Mount Union Colleg e conferred upon him that of D.D. During the Civil War he was eleven mont hs chaplin in the 29th Ohio Regiment of Vol.

In February 1863, he wrote to Henry H Hurlbut; 'Suffice it to say tha t I was twice under fire and know how it feels to be shot at by an enemy . I think I stood the fire well. Those that have never heard the wild, un earthly screeching of a shell, cannot imagine the feeling it gives a ma n to stand in the midst of their terrible carnage.'

In 1863 and '64 he was at Youngstown, Ohio. Owing to declining health, i n 1874, he continued the study of medicine commenced in early life, and a ttended lectures at the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College, at which h e graduated in 1876. He practiced medicine in Youngstown, Ohio about a ye ar, and in the spring of 1877 removed to Marion, Iowa, where he remained .

'For nearly 40 years he was a devoted and efficient member of the Methodi st Episcopal Church; he was a brother to every man. He was positive in fe eling, action and expression, yet made no enemies. As a physician he wa s eminently successful; when he found his medical skill unavailing, he co uld comfort the dying with Christian love and tender words, and point the m to the Great Physician.'
