George M. Cryst was the plant superintendent of Snyder Packing. This comp
any later became known as Winters & Prophet I have copies of the article
s to form this business by John Winters and John M. Prophet. The busines
s was formed as a corporation in April1874.
Then the plant was sold to General Foods and later to Bird's-Eye. A
s a business in Mt. Morris, the 'canning plant' was a large employer. I a
ssume that the State Hospital at Sonyea, N.Y. was the larger employer i
n the area. But never the less, this plant played a big economic impact o
n Mt. Morris, though admittedly the impact was 'seasonal.' Our informatio
n is limited on the plant's history:
1). The Rochester Times Union @ 04/19/57 reported that Bird's Eye sold th
e plant to an investment company from Rochester. At that time they expect
ed to hire between 100 and 200 people to operate the plant. Bird's Eye cl
osed the plant in 1954. The article reports the canning and freezing equi
pment was removed, and the two large freezers dismantled.
Currently ( 09/17/1998) the County Historical Society - Historian Pat Sch
aap reported that the factory was in great disrepair now.
MT. MORRIS - ( over view ) [Mount Morris] Formerly called 'Allens Hill,
' from Ebenezer Allen, the first settler. Col. John Trumbull, of Revoluti
onary memory, at one time contemplated making it his place of residence
. He planted an orchard, selected a site, and made some preparations fo
r building. He changed the name to 'Richmond Hill.' When he abandoned th
e idea of settling here, the place received its present name.
[in 1784 or '85] Among the early settlers were Benj. W. Rogers, Isaac Bro
nson, Gen. Mills, and Jesse Stanley, from Conn. The first store was kep
t by Ebenezer Allen, about 1790. He bought in a lot of goods from Philade
lphia, for the purpose of trading with the Indians. The first mill was bu
ilt about 1820, by William Shull.

Mount Morris With a population of 4,633, Mount Morris is the fifth larges
t town in Livingston County.
Mount Morris was founded by General William A. Mills who was also one o
f the founders of Livingston County. It is one of four communities so nam
ed in the United States. The others are in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Il
linois.
It was named for Robert Morris, on of the principal land purchasers in th
e Holland Purchase. After completion of the $30 million Mount Morris floo
d control dam on the Genesee River in 1952, the town was christened wit
h the sobriquet, 'Best Town by a Dam Site.'
Mount Morris is the birthplace of Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge o
f Allegiance, Major John Wesley Powell, explorer of the Colorado River, a
nd Ross Barnes, first batting champion of the National Baseball League.
On the site of the former State TB Hospital, the County developed the Liv
ingston County Campus. The 100 bed health resources facility provides a h
ome and medical supervision for senior citizens. Numerous other county de
partments are located on the campus, along with a beautiful wooded Count
y Park where picnic and recreational facilities are available.
The headquarters of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, its Ch
arles G. May Occupational Center, and the Cooperative Extensive headquart
ers are all located within the village.
The Genesee Expressway (I-390) provides Mt. Morris with easy access to th
e Rochester Area Business Districts and the Rochester International Airpo
rt. Interstate 390 connects the town with Federal Highways 36, 408 and th
e New York State Thruway for long haul travel as well as shorter metropol
itan trips.
