Marr iage certificates, other military records, and children's birth certifica tes support many other dates. EMIGRATION: Per Dorothy Hurlburt-Freund: Ca me west from birth state, New York, with family. MILITARY: Was Civil Wa r veteran. First enlistment: 16 Nov 1861, Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa, 15 th Iowa Infantry, Company A. Wounded at battle of Shiloh, 6 Apr 1862. Dis charged for disability, 31 May 1862, St Louis MO. Second enlistment: 15 F eb 1864, Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa, 1st Iowa Cavalry. Discharged 28 Ma y 1865. MARRIAGES: Data is from marriage certificates. Record of divorc e from Katherine not found, but child of 2nd wife (by her 1st marriage) e xecuted an affidavit that Gus and Katherine were divorced. No legal recor d of divorce from Laura was found but Soldiers' Home admit application st ated 'unmarried', and she was buried under surname of first husband. NOTE : After Laura's death he placed son Byron, and Laura's minor children (b y her first husband) Benjamin and Clara(?) Brooks, in Iowa Soldiers' Orph ans Home, Davenport, Iowa. DEATH: Death data is per Tama County records . Burial location is based on visual examination of gravestone. NOTE: Des cendants of first wife said he was intemperate, had mean temper, and wa s abusive to her; and that his son George finally ejected him from the ho me and told him never to return.
