He was a sailor, and it is said that he was a mate on a vessel, and durin g a gale, ordered a man aloft to do something, but who declined. Charle s thereupon went up himself, but a rope gave way, and he thrown into th e sea and drowned. the year was 1788 or 89. He was unmarried. (Hurlbut ge n)

His wife, Finette, was of Winchester when they married, and were residin g in Winchester Centre, Ct., in 1862. (HG)
Thomas and Finett's 25th wedding anniversary was noted in the Winsted He rald, January 5, 1885 "Thomas A. Hurlbut and Finette E. Eggleston wer e married May 31, 1860 by the Rev. Ira Pettibone. They have always resid ed here and a gathering at their house was planned for last Friday, to e xpress the good will and appreciation of their friends, at the complet ion of twenty five years of married life. Mr. and Mrs. Hurlbut's four c hildren were present, also Mr. and Mrs. John M. Burr of Burrville and oth ers to the number of sixty, and the whole affair was very enjoyable, alt hough Mrs. Hurlbut was suffering from temporary disposition at the time. "

(Jan. 4, 1889) "T. A. Hurlbutt of the Old Society had the misfortune t o lose his cow recently, died from eating too much meal which she go t at, but he has discovered one pleasant characteristic among his neighb ors as a result of his loss- that they are good ones, who came to his rel ief unsolicited. It is possible that an Overruling-Providence allows cow s to eat too much dry meal sometimes in order to see what kind of neighbo rs an unfortunate man has. It is needless to say that Mr. Hurlbut appreci ates good neighbors.

(Jul. 5, 1889) "T. A. Hurlbut of Winchester Center has a Bartlett pear t ree which now exhibits half grown fruit and also full blossoms. It is sup posed that Mr. Hurlbut sat down on the foot of the tree early last sprin g and stopped the circulation."

From the record of the Probate Office at Winchester it is found that Tho mas's sister....filed a petition to have him committed to the state hospi tal due to insanity.

From the Winsted Herald (1895) "Mr. Stephen Hurlbut of Southbridge, Mass . and Mrs. Clara Turner of Millbury, Mass., were at Winchester Friday, wi th Mr. and Mrs. John Burr to attend the funeral of their brother, Mr. Th omas A. Hurlbut. An older sister is Mrs. Sarah B. Covey of Duluth, Minnes ota.
Rev. Mr. Goodenough's remarks were especially appropriate and comfortin g. He said that Mr. Hurlbut had been a member of the Winchester church f or more than Forty-two years, and referred to the calamity from which h e had suffered since his boyhood. Some older people will remember that a bout fifty years ago Mr. Hurlbut was wounded by the accidental discharg e of a gun, so that his life was dispaired of for a long time, and h e has always carried in his body some of the shot which could not be ext racted. Mr. Hurlbut was the youngest son of the late Samuel A. Hurlbut , second, an esteemed man in the community. His mother was Lavinia Blak e of the known and prominent family here."
