From the front page of the Winsted Citizen (Dec. 7, 1925); "Deacon Osca r P. Hurlbut, a prominent and lifelong resident of Winchester Center an d actively identified with its various interest for many years, died at h is home in Winchester Center Sunday morning at 6:30 o'clock.
Oscar P. Hurlbut was born at Winchester May 9, 1861, the son of Thomas A . and Finette Eggleston Hurlbut, and lived ther all his life. He acquire d his early education at the 'Old Red Schoolhouse' in Winchester and comp leted his studies at the Connecticut Literary Institute at Suffield. He b egan began teaching school at the age of 17 and continued in that vocatio n for a number of years.
He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Alice Phelps, also of Wi nchester, to whom were born three children, Mrs. Bertha Hart of Winsted , Lester R. Hurlbut of Winchester Center, and Ethel, who died in infancy . In 1908 he married Miss Jennie Hill of Madison, to whom were also bor n three sons, Leroy and Winfred, both of students in Gilbert School, Wins ted and Charles. Mr. Hurlbut became active at an early age in the communi ty and church life of the town. Fifty years ago, May 9, 1875, at the ag e of 14, he joined the Winchester Church and at his death stood second i n length of membership among the members.
Deeply fond of music, he served as its chorister for 35 years, and conti nued in that office up to the time of his death, having succeeded Harve y Andrews in that office. His interest and kindness for children was evid enced by the fact that for 28 consecutive years he served the Wincheste r church as Sunday school superintendent, being first appointed to that o ffice in 1889. On June 5, 1902, he was elected a decon of the hill town c hurch which he loved and served so well, and for 23 consecutive years fi lled faithfully the important office. He also was clerk of the Ecclesias tical society for 25 continuous years.
Starting in the farming business at the commencment of his married life , he became a shipper of milk to the New York City market. An excellent c abinet maker, he opened a shop and became the carpenter of the Center, er ecting a number of buildings, including the schoolhouse. He was ever at t he beck and call of his neighbors as carpenter, mason, plumber, painter a nd paperhanger; always willing and ready to help a friend and neighbor i n need. as a cabinet maker he was an expert.
A loving husband, loyal friend, ever a peacemaker and a Christian, the w hole hilltop community joins as one in mourning his loss. Besides his imm ediate family he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Flora Eaton Lord of Brookline , Mass., and Annista Pinney of Winchester. (Jeff Hurlbut - W. Springfield )
