While working in Washington, DC, they moved to Newington, VA, and buil t a log cabin on the Cinder Bed Road a few miles south of Mount Vernon. J ohn and Martha were born in Pittsburgh because Ruth went home to be wit h her folks at time. After a short time with the Department of Commerce , Don took a job with the REA. The new position of Auditor required thei r move to Brainerd, MN, in about 1942. He audited the books of local ele ctrical cooperatives in northern Minnesota. They moved to Park Avenue o f Bemidji in 1945 where David was born. [S713]
Don's folks were living in the log cabin in Virginia at that time. He en couraged then to move to Minnesota and the two families eventually bough t and lived on a small farm about ten miles east of Bemidji on the old Ca ss Lake Highway. [S713]
While in Bemidji Don and Ruth operated two restaurants, one in Roueau an d another in Bemidji. In addition, Don started the Northern Flight Trans portation Company which was a bus line between Bemidji and Baudette, MN . Don and his partner Al Lowe took turns driving the bus. [S713]
Don moved to Seattle, Washington in 1947. The family soon followed. Whi le there Don worked for Boeing Aircraft Company as a draftsman. In 195 0 the family moved to Nome, Ak, because Don had purchased an accounting f irm. Ruth took care of much of the accounting business while Don worke d on the police force and was an officer in the National Guard. His duti es in the National Guard were to work with a team which flew to remote vi llages to recruit Eskimos to serve as scouts to observe unusual event o n the Alaskan and Russian boarder. [S713]
Ruth returned to Bemidji with the family and lived briefly with the senio r Hurlberts and then moved to the Folkert's farm which they rented for $ 5 per month. Later when Don got back, they purchased the farm by makin g payments of $35 per month. Ruth worked at the Mileage Cafe and Don wor ked on the Bemidji Police Force. [S713]
Don went blind in 1959 as a result of an aneurysm in the brain. The init ial stages had been a problem while he was still in Alaska. Ruth starte d working at Naylors Electric Company that same year as a bookkeeper an d trainer of new employees on the computer systems. She worked at Naylor s until her retirement in 1980. [S713]
They moved off the farm to a comfortable home on Mill Street in 1973. Aft er an extended fight with cancer, Don died in 1976 in the Bemidji Hospita l. [S713]
After the marriage of her youngest daughter, Eileen, in 1982, Ruth has ha d a time of minimal family responsibilities in which she has enjoyed th e respect and gratitude of those she helped and nurtured for so many year s. [S713]
Her home has been a continual base of her Christian hospitality. For exa mple, she hosted Russell as he returned to Bemidji to work on his mobil e home park. In addition, for countless weekends, relatives came to visi t her and others in Bemidji. She hosted her grandson David Lee Hurlber t while his father was in Korea. Later when her son David retired from t he Army, he stayed with her. [S713]
In addition to her ministry of hospitality, she served as President of UM W and Circle Group leader at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji. Thi s ministry involves serving coffee on Sunday morning and other similar se rvices to the church. She also serves with a team from the church whic h holds a church service ounce a month at the Beltrami County Nursing Hom e. [S713]
Services to the community involve Bemidji Professional and Business Women 's Organization and the position of President of the Bemidji Federated Wo men's Club. She served two years a Board member of the United Way and Se cretary and Membership Chair and Board member of League of Women Voters , all in addition to various leadership and volunteer roles in Senior Cit izens.
