[Brøderbund Family Archive #318, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected State s/Counties, 1860, Date of Import: Jan 12, 1998, Internal Ref. #1.318.1.18 253.172] Individual: Hurlburt, George W. County/State: Lamoille Co., VT L ocation: Waterville Page #: 941 Year: 1860 Profession: Mason Hobbies: Fis hing - Unique Character - Could eat fish without 'spitting' out the bones , would eat all the fish he wanted, then spit out the fish bones
Made a cement minnow box - loved to use minnows for his favorite spor t - fishing. Did most of his fishing in the Genesee River.
Individual: Hurlburt, George W. County/State: Lamoille Co., VT Location : Waterville Page #: 941 Year: 1860
One of the theories as to why the Hurlburts left Vermont is directly rela ted to the farming conditions of Vermont. 'Like most of New England, Verm ont is generally covered with thin glacial till soils, typically acidic a nd relatively infertile.' My research also revealed that in the Champlai n Valley and some other smaller lowlands of Vermont however, are ancien t lake beds containing clay sediments that provide isolated pockets of be tter farmland. At the base of the Green Mountains are some glacial deltas , two examples being in South Hinesburg and in Bristol. Thus as a poore r emigrant German Family they were most likely dependent upon agricultura l industry for their sustenance, and when farming became difficult they m oved on - perhaps were other family relatives had secured income ie Mt. M orris New York.
Please note Mormon Leader Joseph Smith was born near Sharon Vermont - the n moved to Palmyra New York - about the same time as the Hurlburts.
POINT OF INTEREST: The GEORGE HURLBUT was a 3-masted, square-rigged ship , 1047 tons, built in Essex, Connecticut in 1850, and registered at New Y ork on 23 December 1850. She sailed originally in the Hurlbut Line betwee n Havre and New York, with the winter crossing (between December and Marc h) from Havre to New Orleans, until mid-1854, when she was transferred t o Hurlbut's Antwerp-New York service. In 1856, Ezra D. Post, master, sh e was advertized as sailing in Tapscott's Line of New York-Liverpool pack ets, and in 1859, Thomas S. (or L.) Masson, master, as sailing in the Pos t Line of New York-Mobile packets and in the Stanton & Thompson Line of N ew York-New Orleans packets [Forrest R. Holdcamper, comp., List of Americ an-flag Merchant Vessels that received Certificates of Enrollment or Regi stry at the Port of New York, 1789-1867 (Record Groups 41 and 36), Nation al Archives Publication 68-10, Special Lists 22 (Washington, DC: Nationa l Archives and Records Service, 1968), pp. 276; Carl C. Cutler, Queens o f the Western Ocean; The Story of America's Mail and Passenger Sailing Li nes (Annapolis: United States Naval Institute, c1961), pp. 388 396, 397 , 497, and 521]. I know nothing at present of the GEORGE HURLBUT's late r history or ultimate fate. - [Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing Lis t by Michael Palmer - 21 March 1998] [S977]
