Notes

When he was a young man a young man eighteen years of age he walked mos t of the way from New York to Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. In 1 853 he came to Delaware county, Iowa, and began farming in Colony townshi p, where he owned one hundred and sixty acres of fertile land. Later he d isposed of this farm and purchased three hundred and twenty acres of lan d in Oneida township, where he resided for seven years, when he retired f rom active work. In addition to cultivating the fields he raised grade d cattle and both lines of business returned to him good profits. In th e evening of life he retired to Greeley, where he lived at ease, as he wa s assured of a competence for the remainder of his days. He passed away o n the 31st of December, 1891, and is laid to rest in Earlville.

Mr. Hulbert was a republican and served as school director in Colony tow nship. He was not active in politics, however, nor was he a member of an y fraternal organizations, as he found that the cultivation of his field s and the care of his stock demanded his undivided attention. He found hi s greatest pleasure in the enjoyment of his home and the companionship o f his family, to whom he was devoted. In improving and developing his far m he contributed to the prosperity of the county and his uprightness of l ife gained him the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens. In 1905 hi s family removed to Manchester, where they now live, although they stil l own their land near Oneida. Mrs.
