Christopher received a fair education, especially in mathematics, and h
e became a skillful surveyor. In the early part of the Revolution, he enl
isted in the army for a year, and served till honorably discharged. He wa
s with Washington when he retreated through New Jersey late in 1776 and a
gain when they took Trenton. After his discharge he visited the Wyoming c
ountry in 1777 and also in 1778, the year his fathers family removed fro
m Connecticut. He remained with his father, it is believed, in Shawangunk
, but in 1779, in advance of the family, he went to Hanover in Wyoming Va
lley. In the spring of 1796, he visited and bought about 1000 acres on th
e Canisteo River in New York. A year later, with his eldest son (only 1
3 years old), opened a small clearing, and built a log house on the land
. Returning to Hanover, he embarked with his family, in the autumn of tha
t year in a boat, going up the Susquehanna, to the mouth of the Canisteo
, and then on to their home in the wilderness. There was then no other ho
use nearer than Hornellsville, a distance of 5 miles south, while in an
y other direction, the dense woods stretched much farther away, before co
ming to a neighbors cabin. In this isolated abode they resided some years
, with no neighbors but indians, until the arrival of settlers. It was no
t till about 1805, that Christopher built a large framed house, and in fu
rnishing entertainment for increased travel, proved tavern keeping in tha
t region a possibility. He also erected a store house and a saw-mill, an
d built the first ark-boats on the Canisteo. To his embryo village he gav
e the name Arkport. In person he was a tall slender man , a great walker
, with few being able to keep up with him through the woods. He was a ma
n of liberal views, and at all times was am ardent advocate for public im
provements. He held the office of judge in his county; his public and pri
vate character was above reproach. For many years he was a professed Chri
stian. In 1840, after his death, his wife received a pension for his serv
ices in the war. (Hurlbut Gen.) Soldier lived at Groton, Ct. at time of e
nlistment. His widow applied September 4, 1839 at age 80 for his pension
. Soldier and widow had married May 2, 1782 and soldier died April 19, 18
31. A daughter Abigail Hurlbut, of Hornellsville, Steuben Co., NY. made a
ffidavit November 20, 1839 aged 56, one Naphtali Hurlbut made affidavit J
une 27, 1839 Deerfield, NY. and stated he was a brother of Christopher Hu
rlbut. Family records show soldier married Elizabeth Man and their childr
en were.....a bible leaf was sent to Myron Hurlbut at Arkport, Steuben Co
., NY. on December 7, 1881. (Abst Rev War Files) He settled in Hornellsvi
lle, Steuben Co., NY. in 1795 (French's Gazetteer of New York, 1860) Ch
ristopher (1776), enlisted for one year in Lippitt's Rhode Island Regimen
t, and was employed in construction fortifications new Newport. He was wi
th the army in the retreat through the Jerseys and at the battle of Trent
on. (Mrs. Martha Hoyt Corss - DAR ID # 7617)
