John was but a little over the age of 16 when he enlisted for a year in t he Revolutionary army. Like his brother Christopher, he was with Washingt on, and took part in the success at Trenton. He removed from Connecticut , to the Wyoming Valley of Penn., where his father located. From a diar y of John's, it is seen that he was at one time a school teacher. In Ma y 1795, he left his his home in Penn. for western New York, where he boug ht land. He returned and sold his place in Hanover, Wyoming Valley, and i n July, of the same year, started with his family in a boat up the Susque hanna River; his destination was Palmyra, New York, his future home. It i s said He set up a distillery as early as 1796. (This was for the manufac ture of whiskey no doubt, and industry extensively pursued in Pennsylvani a). Noted in his diary '1797 May 7, agreed with the printer of 'Ontario G azette', for the paper at 14 shilling per year. May 11, raised my barn. ' (this barn was still standing in 1862) 'July 4, delivered an oration t o a large concourse of people.' the topic was, 'may we cultivate the vin e and the sheaf, in this New World, and furnish the Old with bread.' '5t h (July), the sumer has been exceeding dry. 13th frost this morning.' 'Bu ilt my house on the street, and moved into it 28 Aug.' John was called 'c aptain' and was a prominent citizen until his death, which occurred fro m the prevailing epidemic in Palmyra at the time. (Hurlbut Gen)
