Also, known as Edward D. Woodard and as John Ring, USN Quartermaster; ha d credit for battle of Williamsburg as member of Union Navy. Also, repor tedly captured in New Orleans by confederates after which served in Stone wall Jackson's Confederate unit, prior to service in USN. Middle initia l D. for Durgy, (poss. variant of Durgee, Durkee, and also used Durgin/Di rgin on his Civil War pension papers, changing it from Durgie) (There i s a Durgy family entered in records as both Durgy and Durkee born abt 163 2 in Meath Co, Ireland, m. 12/20/1664 prob. in Ipswich, Ma to Martha Cros s, b. 3/15, 1642/43 in Ipswich, Mass, d. Jan 11 1726/27 in Windham, Ct . Is this a lead?) Oral history indicates that he was apprenticed at ag e 12 to a tanner in Boston, working as a muleskinner (driver). Apparentl y in a dispute with the tanner, he hit him over the head and presumed hi m left for dead as he ran away and stowed or got on board a ship as a cab in boy. Was aboard the ship of Adm. Peary when he opened the ports of Ja pan. Worked as seaman until joined USN, presumably. Said that when h e finally returned home to see (post CivW?) his mother, a young girl answ ered the door and turned out to be a sister he'd never seen. Used the a lias John Ring, because of thinking incorrectly that he'd killed the boss . After about 1 yr of marriage in Winooski, moved to Yolo Co. Calif. whe re he worked lst for his uncle(s) then later farmed on his own. First ch ild of his and Seraph's, Herbert, was buried in Protestant cemetery at Wi nooski Falls, Vt. next to an infant brother of Ebenezer. [S787]
