'John Q. A. Hurlburt was born December 13, 1833, in Munceytown, Canada We st (now Muncey, Onta 07. His wife was the daughter of Samuel and Diadam a (Moore) Adams. They were married in Monroe C om saw any white people , except his father and mother, and the Indian language was practicall an 's brogue, which is more than can be said of his English, for until he wa s nearly grown, pe ly translated means 'Star Net,' that being the India n name for the Little Dipper.' 'In 1844 M wa, Ill., over a very muddy roa d, and often for considerable distances without a house or any dland fro m the landing clear back to Westport, a distance of nearly seven miles . This sectio tled the remnants of various tribes of Indians. These ha d small villages and did a little fa n Missouri and the wild and warlik e tribes further west. It was only a few days travel west th the wilde r Indians on the plains. Mr. Hurlburt was present at several genuine Ind ian war Most of the Kaw Indians at that time had only bows and arrows, an d except breech-clout, leggi ads, except a small portion about the crown , which was braided and had feathers stuck in it, derful endurance. The y were as a rule great thieves, but strictly honest among themselves an t hy. In many cases they were well educated, and they had a newspaper publ ished in the Cherok e proficient in artithmetic and the ordinary Englis h branches, having been taught principally y a course of two and a half y ears at Victoria College (now university as part of the Univers pils bein g able to speak English alone, some French and some Indian. But as he co uld speak t 5 he bade adieu to his school and joined a surveying party op erating on Georgian Bay. Previous to this he had thought to become a sail or, but this experience deter- mined him to t d not get any further tha n Monroe County, Iowa, where he engaged in surveying and served one . Hur lburt enlisted in the volunteer service for the Union, and shortly afterw ards was muster ring his term of service he participated in several engag ements. Except when wounded he was ., April 25, 1865, was paroled shortl y after, and with three others was taken by ambulance to s not yet healed , he returned to what was left of the regiment at Little Rock, after whic h he he excitement did not realize he was injured until the blood poure d out of his boot tops.) 'He also did considerable work for the Oregon Railroad & N c land s for the government. He is now (1903) probably the oldest surveyor in Po rtland.' Mr. and Mrs. John Quincy Adams Hu rlburt made settlement in the e e northeast of Sandy River and about 80 0 feet west of what was later Hurlburt School. Hurlbu y part of his name . The office was closed November 14, 1903, apparently because of the ext en nformation for this paragraph. 'When he (J.Q.A. Hurlburt) entered th e army he and over two-thirds of his company were Dougla , he, as well a s most of the others, have remained loyal to the party. He is a memnbe r of Fa Mr. Hurlburt and his wife, Mary, had nine children, three of who m died in childhood.
