Persis was the granddaughter of Aaron Smith, one of the early settlers o f Athol, Mass, and who was of the third generation from the emigrant, Lt . Samuel Smith, who was the first settler at Hadley, Mass. I will here na me a small, though slightly curious circumstance in family history, as sh own by genealogical investigation. The wife of Jonathan's ancestor (Joh n Hurlbut of Middletown) was Mary, daughter of John Deming the emigrant . Elizabeth, the sister of John Deming, married, in England, Nathaniel Fo ote, also an emigrant to America. Their daughter (Elizabeth and Nathaniel 's) Rebecca, married Philip Smith, of Hadley, Mass. So, while John Demin g on one side of his house, had the honor of being a distinguished progen itor of the paternal household, five generations past, even so did his si ster Mrs Nathaniel Foote, with equal celebrity sustain a like position, a s toward the maternal side, the same number of generations distant. [If i t was possible to follow backward in the father-land, the vast number o f lines of descent of the great body of New England families originatin g in Old England, I believe it would be found that a common relationshi p would be proven far more general, and the source of such affinity far l ess distant than generally supposed.] (Hurlbut Gen)
