Francis Mathews came over with Capt John Masons colony in 1634 and helped
to build the mills at great works , now South Berwick Maine,. He had alea
se 10/01/1637 , of 100 acres for a thousand yrs, on the northwest sideo
f the great island , commonly called Muskito Hall . This was atNewcastl
e N. H. He signed the Exeter Combination in 1639 , thoughdoubtless livin
g then near the mouth of the oyster river where he boughtland of Willia
m Beard , next to Darby Field the same yr. This land hasremained in the f
amily of Mathes , as the surname is now written by manyof his descendant
s . The location is one of the best and most attractivein Durham , comman
ding a wide view of the river bayand surrounding lands.The rich soil acco
unts to a large degree for the prominence of the family. Francis Mathew
s died in 1648 . His wife Thomasine , died in 1690. Hisestate was settle
d finally by his son Benjamin in 1704.
