Notes
He was a Methodist minister and a missionary among the Indians many years
. He traveled the Indian country from Texas to Hudson's Bay. In 1861 he w
as a resident in Port Sarina, C.W., where he compiled a newspaper in th
e Indian language called 'Petaubin' or the 'Peep of Day'. Mr Schoolcraf
t in his 'Thirty Years', page 671, presents some correspondence with Thom
as Hurlbut regarding the construction of Indian languages of the north. T
homas at the time, 1839, lived at the Pic, on the north shore of Lake Sup
erior. At a meeting of the Chicago Academy of Science in October 1868, 'D
r. Andrews read a long and interesting paper prepared by Mr. Hurlbut upo
n the 'Northern Drift'. It was exhaustive of the subject, the data havin
g been collected by the writer, during a long term of years.' Thomas die
