- BIRTH: 28 JAN 1763, Lyme, New London County, Connecticut
[S19]
[S91]
Charles left his own account: 'My parents Ebenezer and Betsy Miner live
d with her parents till I was in my seventh year, and her father havin
g a large family and under low circumstances, my family sent me to live w
ith my grandfather where I lived nearly three years. My grandfather bein
g out of health and unabale to manage his business, moved to his son-in-l
aw Manassas Leith in New London, at which time I returned to my parents
, remained a few months and in the spring of 1772, being in the 10th yea
r of my age, went to live with Mr. Moses Noyes where I lived for 5 year
s and returned to my parents.
I tarried a few days and then went to live with Mr. Seth Lee at Lym
e. With my father's concent, I agreed to live with him until I was 21 yea
rs of age. I served him faithfully except so much of the time I was in th
e Continental Service 1780. I was drafted into the State Service to go t
o Horse Neck for three months; and not liking to go to the State Servic
e I enlisted into the Continential Service for six months under Lieut. Jc
babod Spencer and marched to the headquarters of General Washington's Arm
y, which then lay at The Fishkill in New York State and then joined Col
. Stow's Regiment, Huntington's Brigade in The 7th Company commanded by R
ichard Sill of Lyme, Conn., and served the full time of six months, and w
as discharged with honor --
returned to my old master, worked with him until September 1781, wh
en the British came into New London and burnt the majority of the town, a
nd the alarm was given and the militia was called out in to Town, and
I for one, and, these were drafted for two months; served the time ou
t and returned to my old master's again and worked with him till spring
, 1782; and then I enlisted into the Continental Service for six month
s - - served my country that campaign very agreeably, got my discharge an
d went back to my master's house. On Christmas Day, joined my comrades i
n the diversion of shooting squirrels. It was a sorrowful day . . . our a
moneshon was gone and we cut down the tree where the squirrel was; it fel
l and broke another which fell on me. It broke several bones and I was co
nfined to the house about five months.
In the time of my apprenticeship I became acquainted with a young w
oman and soon after my time ran out with my master, I married her.'
- DEATH: 24 MAY 1840, Lempster, SullivanCounty, New Hampshire
[S91]
- BURIAL: Lempster Cemetery

Father: Ebenezer MINER
Mother: Betsy\Betty\Elizabeth ROWLEY
Family 1:
Rachel Anna AMES
- MARRIAGE: 04 MAR 1784, Lyme, New London County, Connecticut
[S19]
[S91]
Charles and Rachel 'went out on the search for cheap land. They went fro
m Lyme, Conn., on horseback with their goods tied to the pillion of the s
addle, their only trail an uncertain route and bridle path by blazed tree
s. They arrived in The Colony of New Hampshire 1 October 1784 and pitche
d first in Lempster, N. H. where the first two children were born. Soon a
fter, they moved about three miles away and there reared a family of te
n children.
Their first house was of logs. Charles cut the logs in the woods, f
astened a chain around them, put a stick in the hands of his young son, B
enajah Ames, to drive them to the place of deposit. Being too young to un
hook the chains, his mother did so and headed the team back for the wood
s again and so grew up the house.
Charles died at Lempster, N.H. 24 May 1840. Rachel, his widow, wen
t to live with her son, Ezra, at Walpole, N.H., where she had in her poss
ession the original walking staff of Thomas Minor. The family noted tha
t 'there is a strip of Buckskin through it to hang it by about 1/4 inch w
ide, said to have been there when it came. It has been handed down from g
eneration to generation and at this writing, September 16th 1881 is the p
roperty of widow Lydia Miner, releck of Gardner Miner, deceased of Weston
, Mass.'
Thomas' walking staff was last in the possession of Donald Miner, g
reat, great, grandson of Charles and Rachel Miner who, on 18 November 197
3, presented it to The Old Lighthouse Museum in Stonington, Conn. where i
t is currently on display.' Thomas Minor Descendants, p. 124.
