William Gillett served in the Fifth Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Compan y A as a private under Captain E.F. Sherlocks. He was enlisted by Lieut . Pulford at Detroit, Michigan on August 27, 1861 for a three year enlist ment. He then joined for duty and enrolled at Fort Wayne, Indiana. He wa s discharged by General Dix on December 1, 1862 at Chesapeake Genl. Hospi tal due to "chronic diar-and miasmatic manasmus." [discharged for disabil ity at Camp Pitcher, Virginia]. According to army records, he died on th e way home to Michigan (about January of 1863).

Acording to U.S. Army records, he was 22 at his enlistment (born 1839 ) at Niagara County, New York. He was a farmer, five foot seven 1/2 inche s, dark complexion, black eyes and brown hair. He received pay from his e nlistement until July 12, 1862, then he was absent from duty.

Graduated from Dartmouth College with the Class of 1918. He served a yea r in the US Army as an undergraduate serving in France as a member of th e Allied Expeditionary Force. When her returned, the school gave him a ye ar of credit gratis so he graduated with his original class. I believe h e also graduated from Tuck School of Finace immediately thereafter.

Interestingly enough, if you follow the Woodward branch back from Calvi n Butler Hulbert's wife, you find Eleazor Wheelock, the founder of Dartmo uth College. A number of Hulbert's have graduated from that school includ ing me...Bruce Hulbert.

Chet (as he was known) worked all his active life for General Motors Cor p. in several European and Asian locations, including Switzerland and Jav a. He retired in Rye, New York, having lived there probably 25-30 years , working for GM in New York City. Chet was a well traveled gentleman an d later in life made a number of trips to exotic places with his son Rich ard. they were very close. [S1062]
