He removed with his family to Woodbury, Ct, and was living there in 168 2 and perhaps earlier. In the History of Woodbury, the names of the child ren are given with dates of baptism when at adult age, from which it is i nferred they were born elsewhere. Joseph and his four sons were living i n Woodbury in April of 1712, when their name appears on the rate-list fo r the 'North Purchase'. (HG) He was reputed to be the first man to finis h a house near Shippauge Fort, and who gave a lot of land to his son-in-l aw, John Baker, on Good Hill Road in 1704. (Rox Rem) In 1674 he sold hi s shares in the Five Mile purchase (now Eastbury) to John Blackleach. (HA W Vol II p 250) There is a reference to a Joseph Hurlburt (Hist Anc Wet h Vol II p 279), that says; 'resided West Farms (Newington) 1713, when th e site for the new (first) meeting house was fixed upon adjacent to his h ouse. In 1678, he sold to his father, the 5 acre lot in the West Field, b ounded by a highway on the east and west and land of his brother Samuel o n the south'. It continues on page 760; 'The first location (of the tow n meeting house), made by the town committee and approved by the town, Ma rch 23, 1712/3, was 'adjacent to the house of Joseph Hurlbut and John Gri swold''.
