America's Successful Men of Affairs: An Encyclopedia of Contemporaneou
s Biography
Volume I
H
Henry Augustus Hurlbut
page 339
HENRY AUGUSTUS HURLBUT, merchant, manufacturer and financier, was born i
n Hartford, Conn., Dec. 8, 1808. He is the son of Ebenezer Hurlbut, who w
as aprominent merchant of Hartford, Conn., and of Fanny Brewster Hurlbut
, his wife, both members of old New England families. The ancestors of hi
s father had made the Connecticut colony their home since 1637, the yea
r in which Thomas Hurlbut, the pioneer, came to America to settle in Sayb
rook and Wethersfield. On his mother's side, Mr. Hurlbut is descended dir
ectly from Elder Brewster, a pilgrim of 1620, who arrived in the new worl
d in that famous old ship, the historic Mayflower, to become one of the f
ounders of Plymouth colony and a bosom friend ofGovernor Bradford.
BIOGRAPHY: The death of Ebenezer Hurlbut, when his son Henry was twelv
e years of age, resulted in the latter having the advantages of a commo
n school education only. But the young man was resolved to rise. By persi
stent and personal efforts for self-cultivation, he largely broadened hi
s training and laid the foundation of his future success. At the age of s
ixteen, compelled to earn a living and appreciating the value of a trade
, he apprenticed himself to a hat manufacturer in New Haven, Conn. He lea
rned the business thoroughly. In 1828, his employer died. The industry, c
apability and intrinsic worth of Mr. Hurlbut then led to his promotion t
o the position of general superintendent and manager of the business. I
n 1835, having made himself indispensable to the firm, he was admitted t
o partnership, without the payment of capital, solely upon his own person
al merits.
BIOGRAPHY: page 340
After much persuasion, Mr. Hurlbut induced his partner to open a branc
h store in the city of New York, which was beginning to be the commercia
l center of the United States. Mr. Hurlbut took charge of the store and c
onducted it with such marked success that, in 1839, the entire business w
as moved to New York.[p.340]
BIOGRAPHY: page 341
In 1843, believing his partner too conservative, Mr. Hurlbut associate
d himself with the late John H. Swift, under the firm name of Swift & Hur
lbut, and the new partnership soon took the position of the leading hous
e in this trade in the United States. The Kossuth hat, so popular in 1851
, was a novelty originating with him. His firm engaged in its manufactur
e on an extended scale, receiving great benefits there from, and from it
s adoption dates the popularity of the soft felt hat in this country. I
n 1860, the firm of Swift & Hurlbut dissolved by mutual consent, Mr. Hurl
but retiring from active business with an ample fortune.
BIOGRAPHY: In 1832, Mr. Hurlbut married a New Haven lady, Susan Rebecc
a Kennedy, of Scottish descent, and in 1882, their golden wedding was cel
ebrated in Paris by an entertainment at which very many old friends wer
e present. Mrs. Hurlbut died in 1888.
BIOGRAPHY: At an early period in his career, he evinced a decided aptitu
de for the management of financial institutions. He was a progressive ma
n and was called to many positions of trust and responsibility, in all o
f which he had the good fortune to make a brilliant record. He was one o
f the founders of The Second National Bank and its first president. He wa
s also one of the incorporators of The Equitable Life Assurance Society a
nd is now a member of its Finance Committee. He was one of the committe
e selected to superintend the building of the present magnificent edific
e at No. 120 Broadway. He has longbeen a trustee of The Mercantile Trus
t Co., a director in The Home Fire Insurance Co. and The Mercantile Saf
e Deposit Co., and long a member of the Chamber of Commerce. His name ha
s added strength to every venture.
