Notes

He was a farmer and lived many years in Groton, or probably always, unti l he removed from the state. His farm was between two and three miles fro m Gales Ferry, and one half a mile from Lantern Hill. He was a man of con siderable prominence in his neighborhood, having the confidence of his fe llow townsmen, active, patriotic, useful. With a tolerable English educat ion for the time, and a fair penman, he was as I infer from the examinati on of some of his papers, occasionally chosen and officiated as selectman , and also as schoolmaster, besides being the deacon of the church. In th e movements which immediately preceded the Revolution, he was associate d with Col. Ledyard, and several others in the town, as a committee of co rrespondence.

There is preserved of his papers, a full record or journal of his occupa tion from day to day in the year 1775, including the condition of the wea ther also, for each day of the year, with the exception of a few in the m onth of December. Among the entries of that journal, comprising the routi ne of the daily employment of a farmer of that time and locality, are th e following; "winowing wheat", "butchering pork", "shoe making", "cartin g wood", "drawing mill-logs", "shelling corn", "ploughing in oats", "sowi ng flax-seed", "mending oven", "shearing sheep", "planting", "mowing", di gging petatoes", making cider", etc. I copy here also the following fro m same; "With ye Authority & Select men & choosing Taverners," "Annaversa ry fast", "21st about 4 o'clock in ye morning Alarmed with Tydings from B oston," (this was the news of the battle of Lexington in April;) "upon wh ich I set off to meet ye com at ye ferry with ye Col.", "advised to ye Co mp together, bro't orders to ye Captain," "22nd at Capt. Belton's where y e Town were mainly together," "to Robert Stoddards, he refused to take pa per bills in payment for Note;" "20th" (July) "Continental Fast;" " At Po quetanuck securing Ponderson's store from King's ships"; "7th" (Aug) "Te n sail of ships and transports appeared at ye west end of Fishers Island , caused a general alarm."

John Hurlbut visited the Susquehanna valley as early as May 1773, havin g bought a right in the Connecticut "Susquehanna Company", and arrived ho me in June of that year. In the autumn of '75 and '77, he was also in Pen nsylvania. Selling his farm in Groton in the summer of 1777, he, in the s pring of 1778, with his wife and children (excepting Christopher and Joh n who left in February proceeding, for the same destination), with two wa gons, horses, cattle, sheep, and swine, left his late home in New Englan d for the Connecticut colony on the Susquehanna. After crossing the Delaw are, he was taken with the prevailing "camp-distemper", and with his wif e he stopped to regain his health, the others meanwhile moving on. On th e way their daughter Abigail, aged 6 years, was taken with the common sic kness, and at Lackawaxen or rather at what was Paupacke, the little gir l died. The delay caused by these misfortunes, very likely was the the oc casion of their being spared the great calamity of the massacre early i n July of that year at Wyoming, whither they were bound. They removed t o a farm in Shawaugunk, N.Y., where they tarried a while, and in November , 1779, arrived at the land of Mr. Hurlbut's in Hanover on the Susquehann a. It is proper to say, that they were driven away for a while as it is u nderstood, and their house burned, whether by Indians, or else by barbaro us whites, who claimed to act for the State authorities of Pennsylvania , which for some years were in collision with the Connecticut settlers re garding ownership and jurisdiction.

He was a member of the Ct. Assembly from Wyoming in 1779, 80, and 81, an d in the absence of a clergyman in the settlement, he frequently officiat ed by preaching a sermon, etc. (HG p91-93)
