Notes

He lost his parents when not much over six years of age, and he assures t hat he was 'bound out', not long after his fathers death, and it should b e concluded that he received indifferent treatment to use a mild term. H e wrote that he never left his masters home until he was 20 years old, an d said he 'bare-headed, bare-footed, and without education, and green a s any gourd I started.' But the young man had great intelligence, activit y and industry, and success attended his efforts. From the slight advanta ges of his boyhood, he won his way as a farm hand, a boatman, a clock-ped dler, a hotel-keeper, a merchant and farmer. He met with a severe loss th rough the misdeeds of his partner in business, but his good character bro ught him friends to his rescue, and was soon enabled to regain his feet . He prominently identified with the growth of McArthur, Ohio. He held of fice in the military of the state, and for more than 40 years was a worth y member of the Methodist Church. Besides the son listed below, there wer e five other children, of which five were daughters. (HG p 244)
