Harvey 'Hurlburt' lived with his family at Lot 3, Marysburg Twp., Princ e Edward County according to an 1873 era map on the 'Clayton Farm', proba bly a reference to Clayton, New York. He is listed as immigrating from N ew York State and is a farmer. According to a copy of the 'Indenture o f Bargain and Sale' obtained from the land registry office in Picton, Ont ario, Harvey and Mary G. purchased thier property from Charles Stewart an d Eleanor Wilson for the sum of two thousand dollars in may of 1859. I s uspect that these Wilsons were parents of Mary Jane. I note that on thi s deed that the signature of 'Harvey' appears to be signed, quite clearl y as 'Harry Hurlburt'. This property was a land grant from the Crown t o Daniel Wright in 1814. The property then changed hands to Robert Taylo r in 1824 and to Charles Stewart Wilson in 1833. This land stayed i n the hands of the Hurlbut family, it appears, until the 16th of March, 1 912 when ownership was transferred to William E. VanVlack, a brother-in-l aw of Sarah VanVlack(Hurlbut), daughter of Harvey Hurlbut. Accordin g to land registry records Harvey in partnership with William Plews purch ased 100 acres at Part Lots 28, 29 and 30 North Marysburgh Twp. on the 15 th of February 1862 from John Prinyer. On the 14th of February 1866 thi s property changed ownership to Thomas and Elizabeth Hurlbut and then t o Dantforth Hurlbut on the 5th of December 1918 after the death of his fa ther, Thomas. This property stayed in the Hurlbut name until the 2nd o f January 1953 when Thomas Hurlbut, Dantforths youngest son, sold Part Lo ts 29 and 30 to Carman E. Welbanks for the sum of $3000.00. The remainin g Part Lot 28 was lost' to the treasurer of Ontario on the 26th of July , 1955. Harvey was born in Connecticut, U.S.A. and was the son of Am asa Hurlbut and Rhoda Kilby. On the 1861 Ontario census Harvey is liste d as being born in the State of New York but I believe this to be incorre ct. Also on this census his religion was given as FG or FC followed by wh at appears to be Presbyterian. At this time the family were living i n a one and one half story frame home.
