Notes
Francis Robert Kelleher (a.k.a. Shanny) attended St. Francis De Sales Sch
ool [1924-1925] est. at his freshman yr] and Geneva High School. He did n
ot graduate and completed through yrs 10. He worked during the depressio
n with his brother Leo as they operated a filling station near down tow
n Geneva. Shanny eventually went to work at the American Can Company fol
lowing the depression. His Uncle Martin Kelleher essentially opened the d
oor for him and Shanny worked their for 47 years. He retired from the Ame
rican Can Co. in 1976.
Shanny was trained as a tool and die maker - but upon the urging of his s
pouse Helen Ethel Cryst he elected to work in the office doing estimatin
g work. He estimated the cost to produce canning machines, for other comp
anies who bought the machine through the American Can Co. He was notorio
us for referring to the 'form 49' which apparently was the standard stoc
k form used to itemize the data in a standard format for the purpose of e
stimating the cost. Shanny was trained in by a seasoned estimator, at th
e American Can Co..
The following items were added by G.James Kelleher
1. He estimated the cost to produce the machine that put the tops on can
s, not the whole can itself.
2. Form 49's were used to justify cost over-runs, which apparently wer
e many. They were filled out with his Parker fountain pen.
3. I think the guy you were asking about was Hank (or Henry) Palmer, wh
o married late in life and always took the first 2 weeks of August off. D
ad thought those were prime weeks and grabbed them up after Hank retired
.
Shanny is remembered for his calm personality, one who was very quick wit
ted and who seemed to actually enjoy helping others. At his funeral, man
y commented on despite his illness preceding death, Shanny was helping ot
her, such as older folks get their groceries. Tom recalls during the lat
e 50's early 60's that Uncle George Cryst was hospitalized and Tom and Sh
anny during that winter would drive Uncle George's C-J 7 Jeep around tow
n pulling out folks stuck in the snow. This was the helping other tone t
o his personality.
Shanny had great talents for hand work - ie he once restored an old 'bugg
y' that Aunt Clarice had obtained from a farm and later sold for a handso
me profit. Shanny spent many hours restoring this old buggy, but was actu
ally criticized by Clarice for not using authentic material, though she o
ffered none, nor the money to buy them. For example Shanny used a plasti
c cover on the seats vs. authentic horsehair.
Shanny enjoyed a breakfast in the back yard, and also many remember at Co
nesus Lake at the Palmer Cottage, he orchestrated breakfast at the end o
f the dock, but you had to jump in the lake first. While these days in th
e 1950's were blessed with fine memories, there were also days of grave c
oncern and constant prayer. Shanny was burdened with ulcers, and about 19
56, he ulcer actually perforated. After an initial stay in Geneva Genera
l Hospital, Uncle John Cryst 'suggested' he be moved to Deaconess Hospita
l in Buffalo, New York. This decision actually saved Shanny's life. He wa
s not well at all and actually when he was moved to Buffalo, N.Y. last ri
ghts of the church were preformed on him at least once, perhaps even a se
cond time.
While Shanny was not blessed with great health, he was able to live a rea
sonable long live and died at the age of 70. His spouse lived 7 yrs beyon
d him, but for her last 21 yrs she was blind and paralyzed from a strok
e suffered in 1967. Shanny considered trying to actually divorce her, a
s her medical bills consumed all his equity and caused him to have to sel
l his home on 34 Maple Street and sell the furniture to keep her in the m
edical facility. She actually was moved later to several others, and th
e State of New York paid her long-term disability costs.
