He lived some years n Newington Society, Wethersfield, but removed to Gos hen, at the time of its settlement about 1738. The first purchase of land s in Goshen made by Gideon was from John Crane of Wethersfield, of 1/2 th e proprietors right, which originally belonged to Christopher Grimes. Thi s was done at Wethersfield 7 Feb 1738. The land upon which he settled i n Goshen, was the north 1/2 of a second division lot, laid out in the nam e of Hurlbut and Grimes, containing in all 61 acres. The lot was divide d between them by deed dated 24 Sep 1739 'half that lot in Goshen, whic h we now live upon.' He afterward owned the the whole right of Mr Gimes a nd was a landholder to the extent of one right. he is understood to hav e been a man of substantial character, and was frequently called upon t o hold town office. he was early a member of the church in Goshen. His ho me was on the east side of West Street, about 80 rods south of where th e present road leaves West Street for Town Hill. He was generally calle d 'Lieutenant,' and was still living when Mr Hooker settled there in Sep t 1791. (Hurlbut Genealogy, H.H.Hurlbut) He was associated with Dan iel Harris (son of Walter), who arrived from Wethersfield in 1753 . (Goshen Deeds, 4:372; 5:192 ) (N.E.H.G.S. 1989 page 307) 'Genealogi cal Data from Colonial New Haven Newspaper' by K.Scott & R. Conway, 1979 , says; 'Phebe Gaylord, executrix of the estate of Lt. Timothy Gaylord, w ill sell a piece of land at a public vendue held at the home of Gideon Hu rlbut (the executor) in Goshen 21 Oct 1758.'
