He removed, with his fathers family, in 1873, to Chicago, Ill., where i n the autumn of the same year he entered the service of the Western Ban k Note Co., to gain practical knowledge of the steel plate engravers art . In 1885, he was assigned to duty as a bank note engraver and designer i n the US Treasury Dept. at Washington, DC, which position after one year , he resigned to resume connection with the Western Bank Note Co., Chicag o. In 1888, he was superintendent of its steel engraving dept. (HG)

A competent engraver with the Bureau of Engraving in Washington and lat er with the American Bank Note Co. in Chicago, Sidney S. Hurlbut was th e sixth pastor of St. Louis Church. He was a devout Presbyterian and a Co ngregationalist before he received the gift of faith in the Catholic Chur ch. Father Hurlbut was born in Racine, Wisconcin, November 13, 1858. Afte r entering the Catholic Church, he studied for the priesthood in Bulgari a where he was ordained. He spent a few months in Rome before returning t o the United States. He was an assistant to Msgr. Mackin at St. Paul's Ch urch, Washington until he was appointed pastor of St. Louis Church, Clark sville in 1900. He was here for eleven years and made many friends. In Ap ril 1911, he was appointed by Cardinal Gibbons to be pastor of St. Mary' s Hagerstown. He was there for nine years, during which time he won the e steem and love of all people. He died in Mercy Hospital, Baltimore on Jun e 9, 1920. He is buried in Racine, Wisconcin. http://stlouis.baltimore.md .us/historic/
