Notes
Little is known about Kathleen/Cathleen Durgy/Durgin/Dirgin/Durkee, inclu
ding the exact name. Her grandson (or ggrandson) was named Milton Durgy
; her son (or grandson), Ebenezer Durgy, but on occasion he spelled it Di
rgin or Durgin. When applying for his Civil War pension, he first wrot
e it Durgy, then crossed it out and wrote it Durgin, then Dirgin. (Of co
urse, he was on the lam for murder most of his life, or so he thought an
d may have deserted from the Union navy to the Confederate army.) The st
ory is that he was hit over the head while drunk in New Orleans, and draf
ted from one opposing force to the other. And, to conclude he was a ver
y poor speller.
They lived for some time in Waterbury, VT; and apparently also in Winoosk
i Falls, VT, along with nearby Colchester. An infant child, brother of E
benezer is buried in the small Protestant cemetery at Winooski Falls nex
t to the infant tombstone for Ebenezer Durgy and Seraph Woodward's infan
t son.
Oral history gives Kathleen Durgy as her actual name and there are indica
tions that she was much loved, married to an unpleasant man. The story t
hat per- sists to today is that when she was dying she asked for a pries
t (as she had been Catholic); but her non-practicing Protestant husband w
ould not allow it.
There are both Durgy families and Woodward families in Rutland, Vt., bu
t I've not been able to find a connection.
Also, finally, there is no certainty yet where Kathleen fits as the Mothe
r, i.e. in which generation married to which Daniel.
