Notes

Silas moved with his family to Lancaster when his son, Samuel, was a youn g man. According to a letter written by his brother Asa to his other brot her Alba in 1845, Silas lived in Bethlehem on the Sawyer farm and kep t a tavern. During his last years he lived with his grandson, Silas Gree n Hurlbutt, in Dalton, NH. He had been a strong and healthy man accustome d to walking the ten miles to town. One day in 1880, he went for a walk a nd was never heard from again. Clarence Hurlbutt wrote on June 18, 1947 f rom Winthrop, Maine, the following account of this incident. 'My great gr andfather's name (the one who brought up my Dad) was Silas G Hurlbutt, an d he lived at Martin Meadow Pond, between Lancaster and Whitefield, NH. H e lived to be over 80. He used to have fainting spells and one day he wen t out on what was known as Page Hill, out of Lancaster, and he seemed t o be confused. My Dad and Mother told me of his getting lost, and a Mr Go odale, whom I used to know when I was a youngster, told me the old gentle man came to his place and sat down to rest, and was talking of going acro ss a piece of woodland. He seemed to think that he would come into Dalton . Well, this Mr Goodale said he went to hitch up a horse to take him bac k to Lancaster, but before he got ready, the old man had gone, and was ne ver seen afterward. They found his hat and coat, but never any trace of h im. they searched this piece of woods with 200 men abreast for two days , but to no avail.' (NHD EHH) He was listed in the 1830 census at Dalton , NH.

In 1880 the lodge (North Star lodge) offered a reward of $50 for tiding s of Silas Hurlburt, an old and feeble man, who wandered away from his ho me into the woods on Page Hill and was lost, no tidings of whom have eve r been received. He was made a member in 1819, and in 1880, at his reque st, had been promised by the W. M. Masonic burial.
