Notes

After the battle of Lexington in April 1775. George went to join the arm y near Boston. With the company of Captain Coit, he took part in the batt le of Bunker Hill, and after enlisted in the Light Horse Troop. At one ti me he was one of the Washington 'Life Guards,' and in 1778, was promote d to Captain in Col Shelden's Reg of Dragoons. His widowed sister, Ann (H urlbut) Welch, petitioned Congress to be allowed half pay, and George Was hington gave a letter, dated Dec 8, 1783, detailing important facts regar ding Capt. Hurlbut's services, eulogizing his bravery. His death came fro m the wound of grape-shot from a British vessel which had chased some Ame rican privateers up the Hudson River. One of the American vessels had cau ght fire from the attack, and Capt. Hurlbut volunteered to swim to the cr aft, which he did, and extinguished the flames under severe fire from th e enemy. In returning to his ship he was hit by shot. He recovered tempor arily, but a fall from a horse broke the wound anew, and he died. An appr opriation by Congress in 1834, gave the legal representatives of Captai n Hurlbut, five years full pay. (Hurlbut Gen)
