Notes
[Rathbun.FTW2.FBC.FTW]
Possessed estates in the county of Sussex, England, 1307, Edward II.
The surname Palmer is of ancient origin. It is believed my most antiqua
rians to signify "Pilgrim". There were many who visited Jerusalem durin
g the Crusades who returned bearing palm branches, and to those "Pilgrims
" the name of "Palmer" was often attached. Since this time which was duri
ng the twelfth century, A.D., surnames were just beginning to achieve som
e measure of importance, more than one Crusader retained the name. Thus i
t is highly probable that there were at least several undrelated familie
s bearing the name at one time.
Some historians trace the history of the Palmers as far back as Aldwy
n de Cumpton, surnamed Le Paulmers, of whom there is record as early as 1
192. Raulph le Palmere, probably a grandson of his, was a Norman soldier
. The latter knighted by the King on the field of batle, a. 1307.
A lineal descendant of Sir Raulph was Sir Roger Palmer, who was create
d Baronet of Castle Lackin, Ireland, in 1777. The Palmer family of Kenmar
e, in County Kerry, Ireland, was founded by Reverend Thomas Palmer, who (
say records) migrated from England about 1669.
In England have flourished many important lines of Palmers. In 1660, Si
r Geoffrey Palmer was created first baronet of Carlton, County, Northhamp
ton; and the present representative of this branch is another Sir Geoffre
y, eleventh Baronet. There is also mention of a Sir Thomas Palmer, firs
t Baronet of Windham, who died in 1624. Nor is the family unrepresented i
n England's peerage, for there is record of a Baron Palmer, of Reading, C
ounty of Berks.
Samuel Palmer, an eminent print who died in 1732, lived in London; an
d it is interesting to note that Benjamin Franklin worked in his employ f
or some time. John Palmer, born in 1742, was a talented actor, belongin
g to the Drury Lane Theatre Company.
In brief, the history of the Palmer family in Great Britain has ben bot
h varied and distinguished. It is conforting to Americans of hte name t
o know that the family's subsequent history in this country has not bee
n an anti-climax to the earlier record.
