Henry Higgins Hurlbut, in Hurlbut Genealogy..., states that he recieved f
rom henry Alonzo's sister, the following; He enlisted as a private in th
e 55th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, but was subsequently selected a
s a musician. he was a fife-major at the battle of Shiloh when he was wou
nded in the right arm. Before going into battle he secreted under his blo
use a revolver and a good supply of catridges, determined to use them i
f opportunity offered. A soldier was killed near him in action, and Hurlb
ut, flouished his fife above his head and threw it far from him, siezin
g the dead soldiers musket, broke and left company in the rear and joine
d others nearer the enemy. His captain supposed he was crazy, from the st
rangences of the freak, yet the musician made good use of his cartridge
s and fired several rounds with his revolver. After his wound compelled h
im to drop the musket.
In June, 1862, he was fouloughed, waiting in Durand, Illinois for his wo
und to get cured sufficiently to return to the army. (Hurlbut Gen. p.372
