His mother is presumed to have been of the first wife of his father, an d he is supposed to have left Wethersfield at or near the time of his fat hers second marriage. He appears at Woodbury, Ct. previous to 1682 and wa s living there in 1698, as he sold land there that year. (HG) He bought l and in Wethersfield in 1673 and 1676 but did not remain there. In 1678 h e went with his brother, Joseph, to the Town of Woodbury which had only r ecently been settled. Thomas, and his wife Mary, did not remain. Thomas p urchased land in Fairfield, Ct. 27 March 1690, and he settled there abou t that time.

Thomas "Halliberth" is mentioned as jailkeeper at Fairfield in June 169 2 and testified, stating his age as 41 in connection with the Disbrow wit chcraft trial. His father-in-law, Francis Brown, called him Thomas Hollib ird in his will made 1685/86.

Thomas Hurlbut died in Fairfield in 1697. The inventory of his estate wa s entered in court 2 November 1697. Samuel Couch was ordered by the cour t to take the estate into his hands and give security for it. The court r ecords also state that his son Elijah, chose his brother, Gideon, as hi s guardian on 1 December 1714. there is no record of the death of Mary (B rown) Hurlbut but it may have occurred before this action took place.

Mary Brown and Thomas Hurlbut had seven children. Four were baptized a t Woodbury and one at Fairfield. The other two children are proved by a c onveyance of land at Woodbury. According to "Families of Old Fairfield" b y D.L.Jacobus, "On 9 February 1725/26 Thomas, Gideon and Elijah Hurlbut , Samuel Couch and Edrei his wife and John Blackman and Jemima his wife a ll of Fairfield and Ebenezer Mead and Kezia his wife of Bedford, N.Y., co nveyed land in Woodbury, calling themselves the sons and daughters of Tho mas Hurlbut of Woodbury, dec'd." (Ct. Ancestry-Stamford Gen Soc Qtrly V 3 5-26, "Francis Brown, an Early Settler of Stamford" James G.Brown, Cumber land Foreside, Me.)
