Katherine Delphine Goetz
Katherine Delphine Goetz died April 27, 1987, in Eureka at age 56. Sh
e was a resident of Eureka and had lived in Freshwater since 1955. Mrs
. Goetz, a native of Eureka, born Nov. 28, 1930, was a member of the pion
eer Butterfield and Stockhoff, Fleckenstein and Hurlbutt families who set
tled in Humboldt County in the 1870s and 80s. She attended Eureka school
s. She received her master’s degree from Humboldt State University and w
orked as a swim instructor and day camp director for Eureka Recreation de
partment and Campfire. She was assistant superintendent of recreation fo
r the city of Eureka in 1950-51and field director for Campfire in 1952-53
. She taught at Eureka Junior HighSchool and Humboldt State University
. She was a substitute teacher at Eureka High School at the time of he
r final illness. Mrs. Goetz was active as a volunteer in various capacit
ies including Campfire, Red Cross, Experimental Aircraft Association, Civ
il Air Patrol, 4-H, Freshwater School and horse associations for severa
l years. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed horsepacking, traveli
ng, white water rafting, camping and other outdoor activities. She had s
erved as a school trustee for the Freshwater School and was Quota Club Wo
man of Achievement in 1965-66. Her activities with the Civil Air Patro
l included assistant mission commander and operations officer. She assis
ted as an observer and in ground investigations and received the Sikorsk
y Helicopter Civil Air Patrol Award for outstanding services during the d
isastrous Humboldt County flood of 1964. Mrs. Goetz had been intereste
d in aviation since 1953. For 13 years she was active in student exchang
e programs at Eureka High School. She served as director of the local ex
change program and was area representative for the American Scandinavia
n student exchange programs. Mrs. Goetz was also an exchange mother si
x times and hosted Luis Galan from Mexico City, Rita Pinto from Brazil an
d four students from Sweden, Marianne Soderholm,
Jarmila Jelenik, Susanne Jarebrant and Beatrice Jarebrant. She is survi
ved by her husband, William F. Goetz, III, of Freshwater, her parents, Ro
land V. and Marguerite L. Stockhoff of Eureka, her foster son, Stephen R
. Anderson of Medford, Ore., and her daughters, Kristen and Melissa Goet
z of Eureka. Friends are invited to attend funeral services at Pierce Ch
apel on Friday, May 8, 1987, at 10 a.m. with Father Blaise Peters officia
ting. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
