Michigan Biographical Sketches, 1870-1900
WOOD, EDWIN O. Edwin O. Wood, of Flint, Michigan, was born in Goodrich
, Genesee county, Michigan, October 29, 1861. His people were all New Yor
kers, who came to this state at a very early date and were the first fami
ly to settle in Genesse county. His father was Thomas P. Wood and his mot
her Paulina Hulbert Wood.
Mr. Wood was given an excellent education in the graded schools of Goodr
ich and in the High School at Saginaw, Michigan. During his schoolboy day
s he earned his first money by clerking in a country store, and when he l
eft school in Saginaw he went to Flint, where he entered the employ of Ge
orge W. Buckingham, a clothier of that city, with whom he remained unti
l 1884. He was then appointed postal clerk under President Cleveland's ad
ministration, but he declined the position to accept a more promising on
e with W. J. Gould & Co., of Detroit, Michigan, as a traveling salesman
. After traveling for this firm for a period of three years he went wit
h the large clothing firm of New York--Hackett, Carhart & Co. He travele
d for this house until 1893, when he was again offered a political positi
on under Cleveland's administration, that of special agent of the Unite
d States treasury department, which he accepted. For four years and thre
e months Mr. Wood was with the treasury department and was assigned to ma
ny important cases, including the celebrated opium and Chinese smugglin
g cases at Portland, Oregon, and Puget Sound, resigning voluntarily in Ju
ly, 1897, in order to push the work of building up the Knights of the Loy
al Guard, which organization had been brought to perfection largely throu
gh his efforts. He was elected the first Supreme Recorder-General of th
e order and at the first biennial election was chosen Supreme Commander-i
n-Chief, which office he holds at the present writing.
Mr. Wood is a Democrat and a firm believer in the principles of that par
ty. He was for several years chairman of the Democratic county committe
e of Genesse county.
EDWIN O. WOOD.
He served four years in the Michigan State Militia, as a member of the F
lint Union Blues. For a brief period he was engaged in the manufacturin
g business at Flint, being a stockholder and interested in the patent i
n the Flint Revolving Hat Case factory.
He married Miss Emily Crocker, daughter of Stephen Crocker, one of the e
arliest settlers in Genesee county, at Flint, December 17, 1889. They hav
e three boys and one girl.
Mr. Wood is a Mason, a Knights Templar, a member of Michigan Sovereign C
onsistory, 32°, and Moslem Temple, Mystic Shrine; Supreme Commander-in-Ch
ief of the Knights of the Loyal Guard; a member of the Maccabees, Foreste
rs, A. O. U. W., Oddfellows, Royal Arcanum and Knights and Ladies of Secu
rity. He is an attendant at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, of Flint, Michig
an.
Mr. Wood's ancestors, on both side, trace to Revolutionary stock, and h
e is a member of Michigan Sons of the Revolution. He is greatly intereste
d in pure bred live stock and was one of the original founders of the Mic
higan Oxford Down Sheep Breeder's Association.[p.294]
