Enlistment from February 13, 1916 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia to June 4 , 1920. Sargeant Service Co. 6 86th F.A. Was stationed in World War I i n France and was in a band. His Army service number wasR- 2376704. He wa s at both U.S. Veterans Hospitals at Whipple, Arizona and Dearborn, Michi gan. His occupation was a pattern maker for the Phoenix Pattern & Manufac turing Company and he was a vocational school teacher. His 1937 addres s was 3827 North Third Street, Phoenix, Arizona (he had rental properites ). Mary Oakley was living with the Mitchell's. Nellye, his widow lived a t 2118 Pinchot Avenue in 1968.

Nelson was a very gifted musician. He played the paino, drums, clarine t and trombone. Nelson was a member of the band during World War I. He h ad health problems. One which was a bad back due from a fall off of a hor se during the great war. Nelson received a honorary medical discarge an d received a monthly pension check of $900.00 Which was a lot of money du ring the depression. He came to live with his mother Rose Mary when sh e was dying. Ironically, he died two weeks before she did.
