Notes

In March of 1805 Philo, a young surveyor of Roxbury, Ct., with a pack o n his back, headed out from home, crossed the hills of New England, throu gh Vermont and finally into New York. He stopped at Ogdensburg on the ban ks of the St. Lawrence River. There he fell in with land agent Judge Nath an Ford. Ford sold to Philo a tract of 100 acres in the town of DePeyster , he bought the land without having seen it. He was stricken with small p ox and found himself confined in the pest house at Ogdensburg. When he wa s released, he set out to his new property and started clearing it and th e construction of a house. He then returned to Connecticut and married hi s sweetheart and returned to Ogdensburg with an ox and cart. Not being co ntent with level of the DePeyster land, he drifted over into the town o f DeKalb in search of a tract of land that was more like that of Connecti cut. The following year he purchased another 100 acres in DeKalb on the s hores of Osborne lake. The two tracts of land were about five miles apar t and he farmed them both for a while. On the DeKalb land was water powe r that would furnish power for a saw mill. he erected a mill and the ol d mill was in place till about the 1930's (DNH EHH)
At a town meeting, held 3 May 1825, it was voted to raise a subscriptio n for a town-house and church. A committee of three consisting of Smith S tilwell, Nathan Dean and Philo "Hurlbert" were appointed.
