Walter Mitchell had musical talents but he wasn't as "musically gifted" a
s his brother Nelson. He served as a cook in the U.S. Navy. The skills wo
uld later come in handy when he because a cook in a soup kitchen during t
he depression. Later duing WWII, he worked at Horner Woolen Mills. Alon
g with his wife Hazel and son Paul. The family later moved to Jackson, Mi
chigan where he lived for the rest of his life.
He enlisted into the U.S. Navy on July 16, 1918. Her service number wa
s 143-2703. He served on the U.S.S. Alabama, U.S.S. Arizona & U.S.S. Yant
ic. He was discharged in Detroit, Michigan. The U.S.S. Arizona would late
r be sunk at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii during the Japanese atttack on the Harb
or facilities. Had he stayed in the U.S. Navy, he would have most likel
y been one among the many casualties.
Walter was shorter than his brother Nelson, which was over six foot. Wal
ter was as a farmer when he was 14. His father became ill and took over t
he family farm. He became a man overnight. His mother Rose Mary promise
d to repay him back some day for his kindness. So his parents would late
r give him a house.
