they had three children.

A Roxbury farmer, townclerk and selectman, he attended the Center Schoo l in Roxbury which is now the Christ Church Parish House, and graduated i n a class of seven from Booth Free High School.

Succeeding his grandfather and father, he served as Town Clerk from 195 7 to 1977. He also served on the town's board of selectman and was a cons table.

In 1948, he became a charter member of the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Depart ment, which he was instrumental in forming and organizing. Also a charte r member of the Roxbury Antique Machinery Historical Society, Mr Hurlbu t was active in Old Roxbury Days, where he was well-known for operating r estored, antique, wood-powered, steam engines.

His face was also familiar on Shrove Tuesday at Christ Church Episcopal , where he served as "expert pancake flipper." He was a senior warden an d vestry member of the church, which he joined after his former church, t he Methodist Church in Roxbury, closed in 1941.

At the age of 10 he moved, with his parents, from Racine to Platteville , Wis. He studied law, and while living Platteville, he was elected Justi ce of the Peace; he also held that office later in McGregor, Iowa, havin g moved there in the fall of 1856. 'Like the majority of my name, I hav e always had a roving disposition, and in the spring of 1860, I went to t he gold mines in western Kansas. This exploit proved a failure, and afte r spending a season in that part of the country, I returned to this place , where I have since lived, McGregor, Iowa, 1862.' He, subsequently in th e fall of 1863, went with his family, by way of the Isthmus to California . In the spring of 1864, while in Arizona, with several others, he was at tacked and killed by Indians. His widow later married again to a Dr . A F Sawyer, of San Francisco. (HG)

"A letter is shown us by Esq. Hurlbut written by Mrs. Belle Hurlbut to M rs. Walters, announcing the death, in Arizona, by Indians, of Rodney Hurl but (her husband) a few weeks ago. This letter has been a most unwelcom e one to the hosts of friends in McGregor who tied to Rodney with "book s of steel." May the God of the widow and the orphan be the protector o f Belle and her little child in their loneliness on the Pacific shore!"
