Samuel was a doctor in Galveston, Texas from around 1851 up to the time o
f his death. He was killed on Oct. 6, 1862 during the Confederate Army'
s evacuation of Galveston. Philip C. Tucker Jr., a close friend, gave th
e following written account to his son Philip Tucker III about 20 years l
ater:
"The large force at the disposal of Commodore Eagle caused this demand [
for the surrender of Galveston] to be considered fully and it was determi
nd by the Confederate authorities to abandon the city, which was done o
n the 6th when a grand stampede of military and citizens for the mainlan
d and Houston occurred, during which chaos reigned; as evening approached
, train after train pulled out for Houston loaded with refugees and thei
r household effects. The only serious accident that occurred during thi
s stampede was the killing of Dr. S.B. Hurlbut just before the last trai
n pulled out for Houston. He had placed his family on board and was stan
ding upon the platform when an altercation occurred between a soldier, an
d an officer, and the sentinel guarding the train, during which several s
hots were fired, one of them entering his brain, causing instant death
. There were some three hundred people upon the platform of the station
, yet the bullet passed entirely through without touching one of them an
d struck him as he stood at the outer edge. His body was removed to th
e office of the Gas Works nearby, and afterwards to his residence, from w
hich it was escored next day by Harmony Lodge No. 6 of Free Masons, of wh
ich he was a member, to his grave in the Episcopal cemetery."

lip C. Tucker III Collection, Center for American History, University o
f Texas at Austin.
Dr. Hurlbut's wife was Mary C. Seymour. The Texas Grand Lodge confirm
s that he was a Mason and a member of Harmony Lodge in Galveston. He als
o ran the first non-military public hospital in Texas (Galveston city hos
pital).
